Gélinas: Ontario investments in fertility care going to US conglomerates
QUEEN’S PARK – During today’s Question Period, NDP Health Critic France Gélinas (Nickel Belt) asked Minister of Health Sylvia Jones why she is investing in US conglomerate owned fertility clinics rather than Ontario physician owned clinics.
“Northern Ontario residents were excited to hear that fertility services were going to increase, that Ontario would triple the number of families who can benefit from publicly funded fertility treatments. How many of the new 2250 IVF cycles were dedicated to people in Northern Ontario?” MPP Gélinas asked.
The Minister did not answer the question. “Zero, that’s how many IVF cycles the residents of Northern Ontario are getting, zero! The Minister of Health’s announcement on October 8th listed only Toronto based clinics in neighborhoods where access to fertility treatments is already abundant” Gélinas continued.
“Instead most of the new cycles went to brand new clinics owned by private equity firms like Osmington Inc. a real estate/private investment firm, to venture capital companies like Rhino Ventures, or US conglomerates. Did you know speaker that many of the clinics not owned by Ontario physicians charge twice as much for services than clinics owned by Ontario physicians. Why did the Minister choose to fund US conglomerate and private equity funded fertility clinics?”
