NDP joins members of the OHC to oppose the privatization of health care
QUEEN’S PARK – NDP shadow minister for Health MPP France Gélinas (Nickel Belt) stood up to Ford and his conservatives during question period to defend public health care and oppose for-profit health clinics.
“Does the Minister of Health want to know what one hundred and fifty people in the visitor’s galleries all have in common? MPP Gélinas asked. They were all charged by a for-profit clinic for OHIP-funded services. This is illegal under the Canada Health Act. In June, 50 of them sent you a package asking for an investigation, but you never reached out to any of those good people, you never responded and you never investigated.
In June 2025, the Ontario Health Coalition sent a formal letter to the Minister of Health and to the Ministry with formal complaints from 50 patients who had been charged for care in private clinics but reported none of the complainants were contacted for further information. (letter attached)
Gélinas continued “When this government announced they were funding private for-profit clinics both the Premier and the Minister of health stated, “you will always pay with your OHIP card never your credit card.” That promise fell apart, and there are 150 people in the galleries with receipts to prove it. Will the Premier and his Minister of health refund the money that these patients paid for OHIP covered services?“
